Danielle Rippengill is a graphic designer and educator, born in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Currently she works for Bloomsbury Publishing as an in-house children’s fiction designer, working predominantly on middle grade, teen and young adult books.
From a young age she enjoyed finding a quiet corner reading her favourite books and getting lost in their tales. Beatrix Potter and A.A. Milne were amongst some of her treasured and first memorable experiences reading as a child and naturally, Peter Rabbit and Winnie the Pooh become her most beloved characters. It wasn’t until she studied media studies at school whilst creating her own music magazine, that she discovered she could become a graphic designer – this set her on the path to publishing and her return to the love of children’s books.
Danielle received her BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree in 2016 and completed her MA in Graphic Design and Typography in 2019 – both from the Cambridge School of Art, Cambridge, UK. These would become some of the most important years for personal discovery and developing her own practice. Upon successful completion of her MA, Danielle was asked to return as a studio supervisor at Cambridge School of Art and from 2020–2023 Danielle became an associate lecturer. She worked closely with the BA Graphic Design students from both first and second year and delivered various talks on the MA Graphic Design course throughout this time.
In 2016 Danielle started her career in publishing at BookLife, an independent children’s book publisher in Norfolk, UK. Here she developed her love for children’s books further and tried to create new, colourful, exciting, accessible and inclusive books for all children – whilst pushing the boundaries and expectations of children’s non-fiction books. In April 2021, Danielle won her first children’s book award for BookLife Publishing with author Emilie Dufresne. Together they created a series called Pride In… which won the Renaissance What Kids are Reading Quiz Writers’ Choice Award for the Primary Non-Fiction category. The series continued to succeed and was named one of the best children’s books that celebrate Black history and Identity chosen by the Evening Standard. Throughout Danielle’s time at BookLife she designed over 150 books that were published nationally and internationally.
At the end of 2022, Danielle accepted her position at Bloomsbury and decided it was time to take on a new challenge in the world of children’s publishing, but more specifically in children’s fiction where her love for books truly begun.
